How to pick practice music by tempo

Salsa tempos run from about 150 to around 250 beats per minute, and most social dancing sits roughly between 160 and 220. Beginners should start at the slow end. Romantic salsa, often called salsa romántica, tends to be smoother and easier to count than hard-driving dance-floor tracks, which makes the Salsa Romántica playlist a good place to start.

Pick one song and tap the beat on your leg before you dance. If you can count 1 to 8 comfortably, dance the basic to it. If your steps keep falling behind, choose something slower or use a free tool that slows a track without changing its pitch.

As you improve, mix in faster classics and live recordings. Live tracks often have long instrumental sections that are great for practising shines, and old Fania records are full of clear conga and cowbell patterns that help you find beat 1, or beat 2 if you dance On2.
